How Can I Tell What Kind Of Spiders Are In My House?

A common problem that most homeowners seem to share is misidentifying common pests. The best way to tell what kinds of spiders are in your house is by consulting with a professional pest control company.

Alternatively, a simple search on the internet can give you an idea of what types of spiders are lurking in your home. Here are a few examples of common spiders in Oklahoma:

  • Funnel weaver
  • Spitting spider
  • Tarantula
  • Crab spider
  • Jumping spider
  • Wolf spider
  • Nursery web spider
  • Cobweb or tangle web spider
  • Orb-weaver
  • Brown recluse spider
  • Northern black widow
  • Southern black widow

Although many of these are outdoor spiders, they still find their way inside Oklahoma homes regularly.

Is It Dangerous To Have Spiders In My Home?

For the most part, spiders are not dangerous to have inside the home. House spiders are usually preoccupied with preying on insects and any other small creatures. The most dangerous spiders that you can have in your home are the brown recluse spider and the black widow spider.

The brown recluse spider is mainly found in warmer regions. Inside homes, they usually prefer dark and dingy areas. They are between 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch in length, about the size of a quarter including their legs. Brown recluse spiders are venomous spiders that inflict serious bites. Their bites can lead to severe wounds and loxoscelism, a condition that produces an open sore as a result of a recluse spider bite.

The black widow spider is usually between 1/8 and 1/2 of an inch. Female black widow spiders are far more venomous than males due to their larger, sharper mouths. A female southern black widow’s venom is called alpha-latrotoxin, which causes several neuromotor problems. Although hundreds of bites from black widow spiders have been recorded, there have been no recorded instances of deaths in healthy adults.

Why Do I Have A Lot Of Spiders In My House?

Are there spiders everywhere you look in your home? There are a couple of reasons why you may be spotting more spiders than usual in your Tulsa home.

For starters, it may be possible that your property has a hole or crack that spiders are entering your home from with ease. Check if you have any damaged screen windows, cracks, holes, or crevices serving as accidental entry points for spiders.

While you’re checking for any cracks or crevices, make sure you take the opportunity to vacuum and dust your home. Dirtiness, dust, and clutter are three things that tremendously attract spiders. Since spiders prefer hiding in areas that are dark and dusty, consistently cleaning your home will make it less attractive to spiders looking to invade and weave their webs.

One last tip involves checking the greenery outside of your home. Plants, trees, and other greenery that directly surrounds your home should be maintained as often as possible. Any overgrown shrubs or greenery that comes into contact with your windows, walls, or doors can encourage spiders to make their way into your home.
