Tulsa Roaches
The cockroaches of Tulsa are some of the nastiest insects in town. They’re either tan or dark brown in color, with some species measuring half an inch long and others measuring an inch and a half. No matter their size, their habitat is the concerning part. Roaches like to hang around highly contaminated areas like sewers, landfills, and dumpsters. As they search for food in these areas, they’ll pick up tons of bacteria that can be transferred all over your home, including your meal-preparation surfaces. This puts you and your family at severe risk of incurring deadly diseases like salmonella, E.coli, and more.
As nocturnal creatures, they’ll explore your home at night, searching for any stored food items that they could infiltrate. The ability to squeeze through tiny holes and cracks allows them to get into many of your stored food items that aren’t tightly contained. If you see damage to your cardboard food boxes, roach droppings in the pantry, or witness roaches during the daytime, you can be pretty certain you’ve got a serious infestation.
Prevention And Eradication
As one of the toughest pests in the world (and toughest to get rid of), roaches can present a huge problem in the home. They have a very strong and flexible exoskeleton that is not only crush-resistant but allows them to flatten themselves to squeeze out of danger. Their formidability and their pack mentality make them incredibly difficult to eradicate, and home remedies tend to be very ineffective. Fortunately, however, there are some things you can do to avoid an infestation in the first place:
- Clean up the clutter: a cluttered room provides plenty of cover for roaches to move about undetected, which makes them very comfortable and aggressive. Open, well-organized spaces are far more intimidating to these pests.
- Cleaning regularly: since roaches can live off just the slightest crumbs, you’ll want to wipe down tables and counters regularly. Consistent mopping and vacuuming can also limit their attraction to your home. You also need to clean the low-traffic areas including under heavy appliances and the backs of the cupboards.
- Store food properly and promptly: roaches will overrun any stored foods that aren’t sealed up in plastic containers with secure lids. Leaving food in the sink overnight is a big attractant to these pests as well, so make sure any leftovers get put away quickly.
- Addressing moisture issues: since roaches love a damp, dark environment, the best thing you can do to limit their attraction is to manage the moisture buildup in your house. Use a dehumidifier in your crawl spaces and monitor your pipes for leaks.
- Sealing off entry points: by adding caulking to cracks in the foundation and windowsills, you can limit their potential entry points. You should also monitor the weather-stripping under your exterior doors.
